Blessings of
the Wilderness
Because of the coronavirus, we are all living as if we’re in the wilderness. All of our routines are interrupted and we are locked up at home. Life is like the wilderness. The wilderness is a place that we must pass through in order to enter into the promised land, the vision, and the kingdom of God. The wilderness is a place of suffering where there is nothing to eat or to drink. It is a place that is dangerous, and a place that gets cold but also very hot.
Despite this, the wilderness is actually a blessing. Why is the wilderness a blessing? The Bible says that the wilderness exists to make us humble. It exists to teach us that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. It exists to test us, so that in the end, it might go well for us. That's right. The wilderness reveals many blessings. However, the greatest blessing of the painful wilderness, is that there, we can meet God.
Many faithful people in the Bible enjoyed the blessing of meeting God in the wilderness. Abraham went on a trip through the wilderness without knowing where to go, and David had to live in the wilderness for a long time, avoiding King Saul. Even Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness for 40 days. John the Baptist lived in the wilderness, and the apostle Paul spent three years in the wilderness of Arabia after meeting Jesus. The wilderness is the place that all Christians have to go through. So, what is the reason that God makes us spend this restricted and isolated time in the wilderness today?
While reading an sms article, this passage really struck.
No movies. No concerts. No sporting events. No restaurants. No social gatherings. Limited workload. Now that I've cleared your schedule can we talk now? -God.
That's right. Now is the time that we have to meet God deeply. The wilderness is the place to meet God. There is no greater blessing than meeting God in this world. When David escaped from his son Absalom and was in the wilderness, he wrote Psalm 63. “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water”(Psalm 63: 1). David became a man of faith who relied thoroughly on God in the wilderness. The reason God called Israel from Egypt to the wilderness was to allow them to hear God's Word and realize how much they needed Him.
I ask you to actively cut off any outside noise and meet God during this time in the wilderness. Please turn off your phones and your messenger notifications, and focus solely on the Lord. We are able to have deep fellowship with the Lord through reading His word, praying deeply, and praising Him.
The wilderness is a difficult and painful place. However, for those who meet God in the wilderness, look to Him, and trust Him, it will turn into a rich place of blessing like roses that are blooming. No matter how difficult our circumstances, we are safe as long as our Creator is with us. Even if we there’s no water to drink and no food to eat, it’s okay. Even if we’re in trouble, it’s alright. Because God is always with us. In this time in the wilderness, I ask you to please enjoy the blessing of deeply meeting God.
